Questions Just for Fun
Which fact about hippos did you think was most interesting?
Questions to Think Critically and Biblically
How did you see God’s design for hippos and other animals in this book?
Discussion Guide - Discuss any of the following:
- Hippos can swim but must surface for air.
- Both swimming in the water and rolling in the mud keep hippos cool.
- Other animals, such as birds and fish, help hippos stay clean.
- The bodies of mother hippos are designed to produce milk for their babies.
In this book, we learned that a hippo’s yawn is a threat. It means that a hippo is ready to fight. In the book, we also saw hippos fighting other animals, as well as fighting among themselves. Why is it that hippos and other animals fight and hurt one another?
Discussion Guide - Read Genesis 3:17-19. Discuss how Adam’s sin led to God cursing the ground. This cursing of the ground led animals to fight, kill, and eat one another.
In this book, we learned that hippos kill more humans in Africa every year than any other animal. According to the Bible, will humans and hippos ever be able to live together in peace?
Discussion Guide - Read Isaiah 11:6-9. Discuss how, when Jesus returns and makes all things new, humans and animals will not be at odds. So, humans, hippos, and all other animals will live together in peace.
Bonus Question - If you have gone through God’s Good Design Curriculum, say, “In this book, we saw how hippos were designed to swim, live on land, care for their babies, and many more things. What does a hippo's design point to?”
Discussion Guide - Discuss the truth they learned in the curriculum that “Design always comes from a designer.” Talk about other kinds of design they see in animals and how that design, that purposeful plan, always points to a designer. Review the Scripture verses covered and play a few of the games from this unit to further solidify these points.
