I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916

Lauren Tarshis

Chet Roscow longs to make friends while spending the summer with his Uncle Jerry in Elm Hill, New Jersey. Things seem to be going well with a new group of guys until Chet takes their prank wars too far and makes the guys believe he’s been attacked in the creek. But when Chet is actually attacked by a shark in the creek, no one will believe him. Can he convince others of the danger before it is too late?

Parents, please note that in the middle of this book, one character takes God’s name in vain.

Questions Just for Fun

If you were Chet, what is one prank you might have played on the guys?

In the opening scene, did you think Chet was really being attacked by a shark or did you think something else was going on?

Questions to Think Critically and Biblically

According to the biblical worldview, why is it that sharks and other animals sometimes attack humans?
Discussion Guide - Read Romans 8:19-23. Discuss how all creation has been subjected to the curse of sin. This includes things like animals attacking humans. However, when Jesus returns, He will make all things new.

Throughout the book, Chet longs to have close friends. According to the biblical worldview, why do humans desire and even need relationships?
Discussion Guide - Read Genesis 1:26-27. Discuss how God is three persons in one being. This means he is, in and of himself, relational. As his image-bearers, we were designed to be relational.

When Chet claims he was attacked by a shark in the creek, no one believes him because the idea sounds crazy. However, Sid, Dewey, and Monty especially do not believe him because of the prank he pulled. How can leading others to believe things that are not true harm them and us in the end?
Discussion Guide - Discuss how telling lies leads others not to believe us even when we tell the truth. In the case of Cheet and the boys, the outcome could have been fatal.

How did Uncle Jerry encourage Chet throughout the book when he was discouraged? Does this line up with the biblical worldview?
Discussion Guide - Discuss how Uncle Jerry helped Chet understand how to be a better friend to the guys when Chet didn’t understand. Uncle Jerry also helped Chet realize that he wanted him around and appreciated who he was. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:8-11 and discuss how God has called us to encourage one another and build one another up.
