Mirette on the High Wire
Emily Arnold McCully
Children Ages 4-7
Mirette is content to help at her mother’s boarding house and simply listen to the stories shared by lively guests. That is, until one day, a mysterious stranger shows up who has the ability to walk across the sky on a single wire. Suddenly, Mirette’s feet are no longer satisfied on the ground, and she wonders if she, too, can learn to walk the wire.
Questions Just for Fun

Questions to Think Critically and Biblically
Each of the guests at Widow Gâteau’s boardinghouse had a special skill that they worked hard to perfect. Why is it that humans are so good at learning new skills and improving on them?
Discussion Guide - Read Genesis 1:27-28. Discuss how God created humans in his image and gave us the task of filling the earth and subduing it. As God’s image bearers, we are continually learning new things and refining the skills God has given us.
How does Bellini’s fear affect him?
Discussion Guide - Discuss how Bellini’s fear made him unable to walk the tightrope in front of crowds. This fear stopped him from using the talents that God had given him.
Why is it that Bellini was able to overcome his fear once Mirette joined him on the wire?
Discussion Guide - Read Ecclesiastes 4:9-10. Discuss how, as God’s image bearers, we were designed to need one another.
