October 2025 Book Club Recommendations

The Foundation Worldview Book Club aims to equip parents and caregivers to engage children in meaningful discussions by examining the worldviews presented in literature and comparing them to a biblical worldview. While we strive to select books with insightful themes that help children think critically, not all books reflect a biblical perspective. Our recommendations are not blanket endorsements of the books, their authors, or their other works. We encourage you to preview each book to determine if it aligns with the convictions and framework you have established for your family, church, or classroom. Book for Children Ages 4-7

Country fair

County Fair

Laura Ingalls Wilder

Almanzo Wilder is headed to the county fair with his family. He enjoys looking at the livestock with his dad, watching friends participate in the foot races, and eating a big lunch in the church hall. But most of all, he is excited about his pumpkin. Will Almanzo win a prize for the pumpkin he worked so hard to grow?

Questions Just for Fun

If you won a prize at the county fair, would you want it to be a prize for livestock, pumpkins, woolwork, pickles, or jellies?

Questions to Think Critically and Biblically

Almanzo and his family enjoyed time at the county fair. Why is it that humans enjoy time away from work, relaxing with others?
Discussion Guide - Read Genesis 2:1-3. Discuss how God finished His work in six days and rested on the seventh. God wasn’t tired. He didn’t need to rest, but He did so to set this up as a pattern for us, His image-bearers. We enjoy resting from our work and relaxing because God designed us to reflect Him in this.

Almanzo worked hard to grow his pumpkin, and he ended up winning first prize! But, even if he didn’t win first prize, he probably still would have felt proud of the pumpkin. Why is it that humans enjoy creating and caring for things?
Discussion Guide - Read Genesis 1:28. Discuss how God designed humans to fill the earth and subdue it. He designed us to care for creation and to create! We find great joy in fulfilling the purposes God created us for.

Bonus Question -

If you have taken your child through Foundation Attributes of God Curriculum, ask, “Which of God’s communicable attributes did you see Almazo reflect in this story?”
Discussion Guide - Choose an attribute from Unit 1, Lessons 1, 2, or 4. Discuss how you saw Almanzo reflect this attribute. Then play the games from that lesson to reinforce that truth about God.

Book for Children Ages 8-12

One false note

One False Note, Book 2 of The 39 Clues Series

Gordon Korman

Amy and Dan Cahill have already survived the maze of bones, but that was only the first leg of their journey searching for the 39 clues. As they reevaluate all they have been through over the past weeks, they realize that the next step on their journey is to follow in the footsteps of one of their distant great, great, great cousins–Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Can Amy and Dan find the clues Mozart left in Austria and Italy before someone else steals them?

Questions Just for Fun

If you were Dan or Amy, which opposing team would you find most intimidating and why?

What was your favorite fact you learned about Mozart?

Questions to Think Critically and Biblically

Before they break into Jonah Wizard’s hotel room to steal the diary, Amy justifies their actions by saying, “I know stealing is wrong, but this contest is too huge for us to worry about being the good guys–a chance to influence human history, to change the world!” According to the biblical worldview, does stealing become okay if someone does the stealing for a “good reason”?
Discussion Guide - Read Exodus 20:1-17. Discuss how right and wrong stem from God’s character. Stealing is always an affront to God’s character, no matter the motivation or end goal.

This book mostly focused on Cahill members from the Janus branch, all of whom were very creative. According to the biblical worldview, why are humans creative? (Why do we create literature, music, art, dance, etc.?)
Discussion Guide - Read Genesis 1:26-28. Discuss how humans are created in God’s image–we reflect Him to the world around us. Because God is a God who creates, as His image-bearers, He designed us to create as well.

As Dan and Amy search for the next clue, they are driven by a desire to find out who they really are. Most humans have this desire. How is finding your identity as God’s image bearer and His child through adoption (Romans 8:15) different than searching for your identity in the things you are good at, the things you like, the place you live, the clothes you wear, etc.?
Discussion Guide - Discuss how our true identity as image-bearers and children of God is unshakable. Nothing can change this identity. All other things we claim as our identity can be taken from us.
