March 2025 Book Club Recommendations

The Foundation Worldview Book Club aims to equip parents and caregivers to engage children in meaningful discussions by examining the worldviews presented in literature and comparing them to a biblical worldview. While we strive to select books with insightful themes that help children think critically, not all books reflect a biblical perspective. Our recommendations are not blanket endorsements of the books, their authors, or their other works. We encourage you to preview each book to determine if it aligns with the convictions and framework you have established for your family, church, or classroom. Some links on this page are affiliate links, meaning Foundation Worldview may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you if you make a purchase.

I survived the shark attacks of 1916

I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916

Lauren Tarshis

Chet Roscow longs to make friends while spending the summer with his Uncle Jerry in Elm Hill, New Jersey. Things seem to be going well with a new group of guys until Chet takes their prank wars too far and makes the guys believe he’s been attacked in the creek. But when Chet is actually attacked by a shark in the creek, no one will believe him. Can he convince others of the danger before it is too late?

Parents, please note that in the middle of this book, one character takes God’s name in vain.

Questions Just for Fun

If you were Chet, what is one prank you might have played on the guys?

In the opening scene, did you think Chet was really being attacked by a shark or did you think something else was going on?

Questions to Think Critically and Biblically

According to the biblical worldview, why is it that sharks and other animals sometimes attack humans?
Discussion Guide - Read Romans 8:19-23. Discuss how all creation has been subjected to the curse of sin. This includes things like animals attacking humans. However, when Jesus returns, He will make all things new.

Throughout the book, Chet longs to have close friends. According to the biblical worldview, why do humans desire and even need relationships?
Discussion Guide - Read Genesis 1:26-27. Discuss how God is three persons in one being. This means he is, in and of himself, relational. As his image-bearers, we were designed to be relational.

When Chet claims he was attacked by a shark in the creek, no one believes him because the idea sounds crazy. However, Sid, Dewey, and Monty especially do not believe him because of the prank he pulled. How can leading others to believe things that are not true harm them and us in the end?
Discussion Guide - Discuss how telling lies leads others not to believe us even when we tell the truth. In the case of Cheet and the boys, the outcome could have been fatal.

How did Uncle Jerry encourage Chet throughout the book when he was discouraged? Does this line up with the biblical worldview?
Discussion Guide - Discuss how Uncle Jerry helped Chet understand how to be a better friend to the guys when Chet didn’t understand. Uncle Jerry also helped Chet realize that he wanted him around and appreciated who he was. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:8-11 and discuss how God has called us to encourage one another and build one another up.

Falling for rapunzel

Falling for Rapunzel

Leah Wilcox

“Once upon a bad hair day, a prince rode up Rapunzel’s way.” He sets forth to rescue her from her tower, but Rapunzel just can’t quite make out what the prince is saying. This classic fairy tale, set to rhyme, will have your little one laughing as Rapunzel blunders, and the story ends with a twist.

Questions Just For Fun

What was your favorite item Rapunzel threw out the window?

Questions to Think Critically and Biblically

This book is a fairy tale, a story that is not true. Is the Bible a fairy tale like this book?
Discussion Guide - Read 2 Peter 1:16. Discuss how the authors of the Bible claim to be writing history, not myths.

The rhyming lines in this book make it fun to read. Why can humans play around with language in ways that animals cannot?
Discussion Guide - Read Genesis 1:27. Discuss how humans are the only creatures made in God’s image. Because God communicates through language, as HIs image-bearers, we can as well!

Rapunzel kept hearing the prince wrong. Why do we sometimes not understand one another?
Discussion Guide - Read Romans 8:22-23. Discuss how all creation is under the curse of sin. Part of this curse means that we do not always understand others correctly. But when Jesus returns, there will not be any more confusion in our communication.
